Tree Pollarding In South London
Tree pollarding is a method of tree pruning that involves heavily cutting back the entire tree to its trunk and a few upper branches.
Our clients choose to pollard trees for many reasons, but it’s most often used to manage the size and spread of the tree.

Other benefits of tree pollarding include:
Opportunity For A Tree Survey
Pollarding will allow you to assess the trees’ health, as any diseases or decay will be noticeable during the pollarding process.
Healthier Trees
Removing any dead or diseased limbs will improve the trees’ health.
Reduced Risk Of Damage
Correctly pollarding your tree will reduce the risk of large branches falling and causing damage to your property or nearby public areas. Maintaining your tree if the upper branches extend over a public pathway or road is especially important.
Increased Sunlight
The removal of excess tree branches will allow more low-reaching sunlight.
Not All Trees Are Suitable For Pollarding
Only certain species of tree are suitable for pollarding; for example, lime, ash and London plane react very well to being pollarded.
Other deciduous broadleaf trees and evergreens (such as confers) do not.
Ideally, trees should be pollarded in infancy as mature trees can go into shock, experience dieback and even die entirely. The best way to avoid shocking a tree is to pollard it in late winter when it is dormant.
As you can see, there are many things to consider before pollarding a tree, so we recommend consulting a professional arborist.
Due to the complexities involved, you should instruct an experienced, qualified and fully insured tree surgeon to complete the work.
